Designer name: Eckhardt, Rob
  1953 -
After his studies at the Department of architecture of the former Technical University in Delft, Rob Eckhardt established himself in 1980 as an independent architect . Soon, he came into contact with a number of people who dealt with the renovation and interior design of various Amsterdam cafés. In this way he was commissioned to design a compact chair for a nightclub. This resulted in the armchair "Dolores" which brought Eckhardt under the attention of the magazine Avenue. However the furniture industry at that time was in the doldrums and showed little interest. Eckhardt decided to open a store in 1982 to sell his designs himself. Characteristic for his way of working is that he doesn’t consider furniture as an isolated, independent element, but always in conjunction with the space where they belong to. Several of his designs were until recently produced by the Dutch leading manufacturer Pastoe. After Pastoe turned away form the form language of the early 80’s the production of his designs: “Groeten uit Holland”, “Karel Doorman” and “Garni” have been taken over by “Dutch Originals” (Gebroeders van der Stroom).
