Alan Mitchell has over fifteen years’ experience of practice as an independent lighting consultant. Project
experience includes large-scale modern and classical exteriors, structures, bridges, atria, offices, hotels, shopping
centres, aqua parks and museums and galleries.
Work has been undertaken in over 250 projects in 20 countries around the world including Channel Islands,
Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Norway, Oman, Spain, Sweden,
United Arab Emirates and the USA. Alan has been honoured with awards for many of my projects, which include
Scottish Power Sub-Station, Shepherd & Wedderburn, Tower of Time Manchester, HAL 9000 Computer Centre,
Burj Al Arab, Dubai and most recently “best leisure” and “best in year” for Barr Al Jissah Resort Oman at the Middle
East Lighting Design Awards 2007 (Alan Mitchell was joint managing director and the lead creative director at LDPi
when the project was design and was responsible for the design ideas from concept to detail).
As Associate Director of JSA, Alan was principle designer for the largest project undertaken by the practice to
date – the Jumeirah Beach Resort Development, Dubai. This project included a 600 room resort hotel, aqua park,
conference centre, 200 room tower - the world’s first ‘seven star’ hotel on its own purpose built mini-island, as well
as numerous restaurants and public spaces. The hotel was recently greatly honoured to be awarded by Conde
Nast ‘the best hotel in the world 1999’ award.
