Athena Design offers you the largest Virtual Museum of contemporary lighting. The museum contains more than 10.000 lights, 1200 designers and 600 manufacturers and is updated continuously. The museum is specialized in lighting designed and produced after World War 2 and is available to anyone who wants to find more information on lights.
Despite various extensive and excellent publications like "1000 lights" by Charlotte and Peter Fiell or "Gino Sarfatti 1938-1973 selected works" by Marco Romanelli and Sandra Severi it is extremely difficult to get a complete overview on lights which were produced during the period mentioned above. It is this cap this site wants to fill in.
The museum not only deals with lamps which were produced by well-known existing manufacturers like Artemide, Fontana Arte, Flos or Venini , but also with ceased companies like Arredoluce, Stilnovo, Skipper or Arteluce. It also contains about 1000 lights which were produced by the designer (prototypes or limited editions) and art-objects.
The core of its collection (70%) is formed by lighting fixtures which find their origin between 1945 and 2000.
All lamps and designers are documented with pictures and if possible a small biography of the designer is added. Per manufacturer information is given about the date of origin and the founder.
This site is specially meant for collectors, auctioneers and others interested in lighting and is dedicated to all the great designers of lighting.
